20-year-old singer and songwriter Kendra Checketts, best known for her time on NBC’s The Voice season 16, recently released a new single titled “Dear Jay.” The song features a solem tempo, catchy beat and a heartfelt message about relationships.
“This song is all about the ups and downs of being in a toxic relationship. I know there are many people that go through things like this each day, not only myself. So I wanted to create a song to help people through those rough times. It is available on all streaming sites!” Checketts told The Daily Fern.

While her single has only been out for a couple of months, the young artist is already working on a new album “Twelve Hundred”, which she hopes to release sometime next month.
Checketts - a California native - says the recent shelter-in-place order given by California’s Governor, has given her time to work on some of her new songs.
“The coronavirus has been a crazy time for everyone. People have been losing their jobs, leaving school and becoming sick because of it. My heart goes out to everyone who is struggling during this time. This time has given me the opportunity to stay home and work on creating new music, so it’s nice to have something good come out of something so terrible. Other than making new music during the quarantine, I've been binge watching Schitt's Creek on Netflix and making cookies all day.” She said.

There’s no doubt that Checketts is a star in the making. Since going on the voice at age 19, she has slowly started leaving her mark in the industry.
When asked what advice she would give to her younger self, she gave an answer that I'm sure will resonate with many young teens who are absorbed in this new world of social media.
“There are so many things I would want to tell my 12-year-old self. One of the main things being don’t let other people affect you so much. As I started getting older I relied a lot on what other people thought of me and let that affect my music as a whole. Keep working for what you want because the more you try and the harder you work, the more will come out of it for you regardless of what other people think.”
