A new Doc-u series is making its way to Amazon Direct. The Daily Fern caught up with one of the show’s stars, Mya Xellar, to hear about ‘Next Big Thing NYC’.
The Daily Fern: You are a triple threat, working as a model, actress and singer! Can you tell us what made you choose this career path?
Mya Xellar: When I was 3 years old my mom enrolled me in dance classes and I loved it from the minute I stepped in the room. I then did my first pageant when I was 11 years old and that’s when I really knew I needed to continue doing things in entertainment because it was natural to me, and I felt like I finally found something that was meant for me.

The Daily Fern: You recently landed a spot on the upcoming Amazon show, Next Big Thing NYC. What can you tell us about the series?
Mya Xellar: Next Big Thing is a Doc- u- series that follows 8 teens on their quest to international stardom. In the show my modeling and pageant career is followed, seeing what I am doing to make it to the top. Alongside me are 7 other amazing teens working different careers, we have a rapper, R&B artist, makeup artist, actor, entrepreneur, DJ, and ice skater. Not only does the show focus on our careers but also the behind the scenes when it comes to relationships, arguments, friendships and a whole lot of drama!

The Daily Fern: Are there any other projects you're working on?
Mya Xellar: As we are in quarantine right now, I have taken all the extra time to start up an IGTV channel “In Style With Mya Xeller” which has been a goal of mine for such a long time! On that channel I post things from makeup videos to pageant tips to fashion videos and I hope to continue to grow that channel! I also am working on getting merch and my own personal brand started, so stay tuned!

The Daily Fern: Along with being named 2019 Miss Teen World America, you also walked in NYFW. Can you tell us about those experiences, and will you try to earn another title in the future?
Mya Xellar: Being the current Miss Teen World America CT and first runner up for Miss Teen World America has brought me so many amazing experiences, and friends. I am so grateful to have been crowned for such an amazing title where I am able to be a role model for all people around me. You most definitely will see me competing for another title in the future, so stay tuned because who knows how soon that will be!
The Daily Fern: knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 12-year-old self now
Mya Xellar: Knowing what I know now, I would tell my 12 year old self to keep your head up high and strong because it may not be your time now, but when it comes it will be the most amazing thing.
If you want to keep up with Mya, be sure to follow her on social media!
