Singer and dancer Tori Kay dropped an empowering new single titled "Own It." The Daily Fern caught up with the Pop star to hear more about her new music.
The Daily Fern: I listened to your newest single “Own It” and I loved it, can you explain the inspiration behind it?
Tori Kay: Thank u!! I’m glad you liked it! My goal as an artist is to encourage others to be their best authentic self. “Own It” is all about being proud of who you are and chasing your dreams.
The Daily Fern: You have been making music since you were young, can you tell us what led you to join the entertainment industry?
Tori Kay: I got started as a competitive dancer in Texas. The competition studio I went to also had a theatre department. I decided that I wanted to try it out and ended up falling in love with acting and singing. At that time I also became obsessed with the tv show “Shake It Up” on Disney Channel with Zendaya and Bella Thorne. That show really showed me the ability to do all three, singing, dancing, and acting. So I just jumped all in!
The Daily Fern: Are you currently working on any other projects?
Tori Kay: Before quarantine, I was in the studio a lot writing new music and also on set with a new project. Obviously, COVID-19 has halted the process of those projects but hopefully, all of this will be over soon and we can get back to creating! Super excited for y’all to see what I was working on!
The Daily Fern: Anyone who looks at your instagram can see you're pretty bold, not only with your music, but the bright-colored fashion forward outfits you wear. How do you get so confident, and what is your advice to young girls who want to pursue a similar career?
Tori Kay: Yes! I’m all about girl empowerment, loving who you are, bright colors, and sparkles haha! My confidence comes from loving who I am. It takes a lot of time and self-reflection but knowing who you are and not letting anyone else’s opinion affect you is powerful! Definitely the key to having confidence. Fashion can always help, wearing something you feel cute in can completely change your mood and make you 100x happier!! The advice I would have for any young girls pursuing a career in the entertainment industry is to never ever ever give up on themselves. If you truly believe in your dream and love what you do then don’t let anyone else affect how you feel. You can do whatever you set your mind to. Practice your craft every day!
The Daily Fern: When you’re not working on music, what other things do you enjoy doing?
Tori Kay: I feel like I’m constantly working on music because I love it haha! But outside of music I love going to events, I Livestream on a couple of different broadcasting apps, hang out with friends, or play with my dog Lala Star!
